Chinatown Block Party 2018 in Review!

The City and the Salinas Upper Room Church hosted the 2nd Annual Chinatown Block Party- Housing Starts in Chinatown on Saturday, November 17, 2018 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the heart of the Chinatown, on Soledad Street. The event was a great success with 300 to 400 people in attendance and with a great number of non-profit organizations, service providers, car clubs, community members and families donating their time, commitment and resources to make of this event a great community effort. Homeless individuals were assisted in their first step to housing. They were connected to service and resources that could assist them get into housing. The intent of this event, and of the Chinatown Revitalization Plan, was to also assist in making the neighborhood a place where there is economic growth and where families and the community will feel safe and welcomed. This was accomplished through the great community contribution and turnout. During this year’s event, we had more residents, families and children join and participate in the Chinatown Block Party. Many of the children from the community got to enjoy the children activities available for them at the Buddhist Temple. The children were excited to take part in the bicycle raffle and seven of them went back home happily riding a brand-new bicycle. On top of this, the was excellent food, music and activities free for everyone in attendance.
