Big Sur Land Trust has acquired a 73-acre property within the area knownas Carr Lake in Salinas, California. The Carr Lake Basin is an approximately 480-acre seasonally dry lakebed in the heart of the city. For decades, the community has envisioned transforming Carr Lake into a “central park.”
Big Sur Land Trust encourages all local residents to become Carr Lake visionaries! This is your chance to share your ideas on how Big Sur Land Trust’s Carr Lake property can be converted into an urban park that will reflect the heart and soul of Salinas. Please click here to provide your ideas, ask questions or make comments.
In addition to addressing community needs for open space and parklands, the Big Sur Land Trust’s Carr Lake Project will seek to provide multiple environmental benefits including ecological restoration, flood control and water quality improvement. Big Sur Land Trust does not intend to be the long-term property owner and will work with the community and the City of Salinas to create a mechanism for eventual public ownership.
New Police Headquarters
In 2014 the City completed a Needs Study which recommended a 95,000 square foot facility, followed by the City's acquisition of 312 East Alisal Street property through a transaction with the County of Monterey whereby the City exchanged the Church of the Nazarene property located on North Sanborn Road for the property located at 312 East Alisal Stree, in 2016.
In April 2017, the Salinas City Council agreed to issue an RFP for the development of a 75,000 square foot Police Service Headquarters on the East Alisal Street property. Construction is estimated to begin during the summer of 2018 and conclude 14-18 months later.
Designing, building and delivering is currently estimated to cost $49 million, plus 10% for the cost of financing. The project is currently funded with $2.8 million in Measure G funds.

El Gabilan Library Project
It's now official! The City Council on May 15th, 2018 approved the funding plan to build a 21,000 square foot library in North Salinas. After more than a year of public feedback and analysis, the Council's vote promises to usher in a new chapter for the Salinas Public Library. The new library will officially be breaking ground this Fall to build a much needed library that will replace the small El Gabilan Library. A temporary library location is available at the Northridge Mall - the Library Connection @ Northridge.
